Currently if I had components/widgets of varying heights beside each other, there will be a blank space since, the components can only be stack horizontally and not vertically in a row.
Having sections (e.g. 2, 3, 4 columns) would give that ability to add components in various areas as required.
I figure this may make the application a bit complex, but we already have drap and drop capability.
