Hide tab title and add tab tooltip

I understand that tabs need text for a URL reference but I’d prefer to be able to hide the title text and display only an icon similar to record or action buttons. The issue that I’m running into is the tab titles take up too much space. The icons are easier for my users to identify quickly. But, a tooltip would probably be necessary as well.
